February’s “Race”

February’s “Race”

You guys!!! Our last post was our 300th! *pats each other on the back*  It’s crazy that we’ve been doing this whole blog thing for right at about 3 years now! Thanks to those of you for sticking with us! Starting #LiAR has definitely opened us up to a wealth of knowledge (running and then some) and a lot of great frunners!  Shoutout to Mama C who, we believe, is responsible for coining that term! 🙂

Back to the original reason we sat down to write this post…..a half marathon about 5 weeks ago!  We posted some pictures on instagram, but still wanted to put some details out there.  We signed up to run The Texas Half in February.  The timing on this race was pretty perfect for around the time Teal wanted to run just one more half before she said good bye to racing half marathons during pregnancy.  Plus this year they were offering a jacket with your registration!  Apparently you change things up just a little bit from a shirt to a jacket and the people want to sign up for your race.  We were sold and handed over our moolah to The Texas Half.

Fast forward to race weekend and Saturday a front was moving in and bringing the cold weather back to DFW.  It was another one of those times of religiously stalking the weather to see what would happen.  We saw rain, we saw snow…..but what was really going to happen?!

Ultimately we didn’t give the race a chance.  We decided to let our current state of each of us growing a human + slower running + freezing temperatures = no race for LiAR.  You can call us wimps!  But the idea of having to run/walk a half in freezing temps just did not sound appealing nor did the idea of the weather potentially getting REAL bad and either one of us getting hurt.  We each still wanted to get miles in for the day so we hit up Beth’s gym together for some good ol’ treadmill miles.

26 weeks!

Between the two of us we put in 14.2 miles that day so if we pretend like it was a relay with just some extra mileage then we completed a half! YAY! 😀

Oh, Marathon Training Weekends!

We had a good weekend full of lots of time together which included some fun, some productivity and some running! A little bit of everything and maybe a rare weekend of finding balance with it all?

Friday:

We drove to Ft. Worth to hang out with our friend Mandy! For anyone who doesn’t live in the DFW area you might not know that these two places are not exactly as close and one would think. We left Brent & Beth’s house around 6 and after dealing with traffic the ENTIRE time, we finally made it to dinner around 7:30, but it was totally worth the wait.

We ate at Winslow’s Wine Café, which was an old gas station converted to a nursery, then later this awesome wine bar! If you ever go we recommend the pita bread and hummus. There is something secretly amazing about their pita! Just trust us and get it.

We headed to Gingerman afterwards to hang out some more! Duh, plus why would we waste a trip to Ft. Worth to only staying like 2 hours?

We closed that place down, well sorta, our oldness and the fact that we were up early, and just the fact that we were at the end of a long week, we left….around 1 a.m.!  We did last awhile considering we did have to make the trek back to the Dallas side of the metroplex upon leaving.

We decided to make a short stop by the Ft. Worth Museum of Modern art because this cool guy, Companion, is still displayed outside. What he is we aren’t really sure, Teal & Michael even went to the artist’s lecture about him and, yea not sure. Giant under 21 crazy Mickey Mouse? Perhaps we need Michael’s input on this one?

See Beth mimicking him!

Saturday: Rest? Recover, Errands!

Teal headed to Luke’s Locker to solve her shoe crisis. The poor guy there had to suffer as she tried on like every shoe in the store. She ended up with these bad boys. Please God make them work better!

Beth finally got her birthday present! What’d she get? You guessed it! A bathroom cabinet, duh! Who doesn’t get one for these for their birthday?! We don’t have a picture of it,but it’s a lovely white cabinet that Brent and maybe his dad can put up over the master bathroom toilet. Hooray more storage space!

Sunday: Long Run

We headed to White Rock earlier than we have been lately. Last marathon training we got up early every Saturday and ran early. This time we have spoiled ourselves with later runs. Beth grabbed Teal at 7 and we headed to the lake. It was a nice day, overcast mostly, but still warm for Texas. We actually hit a record warm Sunday if that tells you anything.  This is a nice place to break up an 18 mile run since each lap is right at 9 miles.

We actually saw a bunch of people we know to keep it entertaining. Katie (you might remember her from this blog or even from here), Catherine from North Texas Runners and The Kennemers a.k.a. #TeamK!!

We also have a PSA to all the bikers out there. We highly HIGHLY recommend that you steer clear of the white race kits. We got to experience the not so pretty butt crack of a rather larger biker. Trust us on this on bikers, stick to the darker colors.

The birds were seriously crazy! It was right at this part of the lake that Mr. K ran up behind Teal and was like “looks like a harbor” it was awesome. Huge white birds everywhere. This pictures doesn’t really do it justice but it was awesome.

Teal decided to call it over at 15 and Beth made it the full 18! Then we headed for brunch at Campisi’s where we got to enjoy a couple of these!

Mimosa reward!

I’d say we were super busy and productive! Next up? Week 10 of marathon training! And looking forward to Dallas Marathon (but just the half) this weekend!

How was YOUR weekend??

All About the Ladies!

Happy Monday to you all! 🙂  Hope you all had great weekends!  We did, but you’ll have to wait to hear about that until tomorrow! 🙂

Well, this week is pretty much our ladies week here at LIAR (you know Life is a Run)!  Tomorrow night we are supporting some of our favorite DFW vendors in their Girls Night Out event! AND to kick off our week leading up to the ZOOMA run in Austin we are hosting a GIVEAWAY!

We are excited about this giveaway because it is for a product we LOVE!! Thank you to Emily over at GlitzBandz who is SO generously giving one of our followers the GlitzBandz of their choice!  We first got the GB bug when we were searching for what we would wear to run the Disney Princess Half.

Yep! We sure are wearing GlitzBandz in this picture! 🙂

You can’t go wrong with a sparkle headband – what lady doesn’t love something sparkly?  We both wore our bands for the entire half marathon and neither one of us had an issue with slip-age!  Teal even added a flower onto her Glitzbandz to help her top off the Ariel look and even that addition created no problem for the headband!

Emily is truly awesome!  She definitely takes care of her customers and is so personable!  Plus she’s a local DFW-er and who doesn’t love to find something you love locally?? Since Princess Half we have acquired more GlitzBandz.

The bands are no-slip headbands and really they don’t slip!  They are made in either 19 or 20 inch, so the 19 inch would fit most youth.  There are SO many options to choose, so whoever wins this giveaway good luck on actually picking out just ONE that you like! Ha.  Emily also does custom orders!  We are pretty sure she does this special regularly – but if you order 2 GlitzBandz you get half off the 3rd one! How can you beat 3 Glitzbandz for $25?!  Very affordable, cute and do not slip!

The GlitzBandz site does not lie they do "make the perfect gift" as we've already given two away to a friend for good luck in a race!

At this point you are probably like ok, LIAR, tell me how I freakin’ win a GlitzBandz!  Here are the deets on winning your very own GlitzBandz:

  • Go over to the GlitzBandz Facebook page and like the page!
  • Next you will need to leave a comment on the Facebook page telling Emily which GlitzBandz is your favorite and “Life is a Run sent me here”
  • Last but not least – leave us a comment on here saying you did the above two and you are entered!

You have ONE WEEK to get all of that done!  Monday, April 2nd we will be selecting one winner at random to receive the GlitzBandz of their choice!  Good luck and we know you’ll love these bands just as much as we do!

Wordless Wednesday No. 9 – One Week Old

[Added 10/13] Jack officially turned 1 week old on Tuesday! His mommy posted this picture on her facebook page.  While we were busy posting this blog yesterday – Mr. Jack was busy getting his first set of professional pictures taken!  If you’ve been keeping up to date with all of our #TeamCindy posts, Jack was having his pictures taken by Love, Me Photography.  This is the same DFW photographer who shot Cynthia’s wedding at Cindy’s hospital.  And as a bonus I added a picture of Jack looking like an pilot –

Happy Fall, Y’all!

Team Cindy

It is such a honor to me to even be writing this blog – a few weeks ago I got a text from one of my college roommates saying “We are ordering more Team Cindy shirts, do you want one?” I responded immediately with “YES!!”

If we back up a little bit, I met Julie (college roomie) in 2003 and within 9-ish months of our meeting we became roommates.  Right around the time I met Julie her mom was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer.  I know the news had to come as a shock and heart break to Julie, her sister, Cynthia, and their dad.  And in the times I first met Cindy and when she would come down to College Station for a visit, I’d never thought she was anything but a healthy lady with a contagious joy for life and her family.

Cindy was one of those moms of your friends that you immediately fell in love with and always enjoyed having the opportunity to be around and in truth she has passed that along to her daughters, as well as marrying a man that contains the same quality.

The very last time I was around Cindy was in roughly July of 2009 – I had gotten together with Julie, her husband, Cynthia, her boyfriend (and future husband) and another couple for a low-key dinner at Julie’s house.  After dinner we decided to play cranium so Cindy came over to hangout and give us an even number for teams.  She just fit right in and never seemed like a mom who had 20 years on us.  I could always see how Cindy’s daughters were her passion and so important to her.  She loved and adored Julie & Cynthia and never in an overbearing way – I always viewed her as a close to perfect balance of being a mom and a friend to her daughters.

Julie, Cindy & Cynthia

One of the things I loved hearing about Cindy, prior to my meeting her, was she had been an elementary school teacher for years, and I believe before every school year the kids who would find out Mrs. Death was their teacher would come up with these stories of how scary she must be!  How silly they must have felt upon meeting her that first day of school and realizing there is absolutely nothing scary about Cindy Death.

In the early months of 2010, Cindy began to experience organ failure as a result of all the chemo she had received.  Many nights were spent in the hospital with Cindy surrounded by her loving family.  Cynthia was scheduled to be married in early May, but it started to look like Cindy would not be able to be there unless the wedding was moved up.  Everything actually fell into place and Cynthia’s wedding was moved up by a little over a month.  But there was yet another hiccup in the plans for Cynthia & Mike’s wedding and having Cindy be there – she would not be able to leave the hospital.  The last Friday of February the wedding was brought to the hospital so that Cindy could see her baby girl get married.

The pictures above were taken by a very talented photograph here in DFW, Love Me Photography,  you can see her blog here as well as a slideshow of all the photographs she took at Cynthia & Mike’s wedding.  Just six days after this wedding, Cindy went on to heaven.  Or as I have heard Julie say “heaven just got another angel!”

Cindy Death, was a beautiful woman, a daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher and friend to many, as well as being adored by many.  That is why I am so honored to be running a race and running for Team Cindy/Life is a Run.  Teal will be running with me in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Half in San Antonio in November and we have set a goal to raise $1,200.00 for Susan G. Komen ($100 for each month of this ruinning year).  As of today we have $90 towards our goal!  If you would like to donate to Team Cindy please go here.

If you plan on running Rock ‘n’ Roll SA look for me in my Team Cindy shirt:
