We Are Back . . . For Real This Time

We Are Back . . . For Real This Time

Remember the time we said we were back and then proceeded to go radio silent for close to two months?! A lot has happened in the past two months and really in the year 2017. It may go down as one of the highest and lowest years for us thus far.

Baby number two for Beth was born in March and baby number two for Teal was born in June and that basically rounded out the highs.

We have experienced a lot this year together and with our friends and family many of whom have experienced the greatest losses one can imagine and with those experiences has come a renewed passion and need for changes all around.

For Beth this year she is choosing the phrase “Back to Basics.” To make it easier to follow along in this two-person blog Beth has put together her reasoning behind this phrase for 2018 –

For me there was so much busyness in 2017 with working full time (from home), having the kids with me while I work, growing my yoga teaching, my mom’s health and care, having a second child, my husband changing jobs and some other personal minor things that just aided in adding stress. January 1, 2017 my family and I were already in the process of finding out what was wrong with my mom. She had been hospitalized on Christmas Eve and a mass was found next to her left kidney.

0E3569ED-1059-494C-A5B2-73E048FD50FA

To make a long story short with changing doctors and insurance supplements we landed with a doctor’s appointment down at UT Southwestern in the beginning of February. What was going on with her didn’t seem to be straight forward and she had many doctor’s appointments to try and find answers. The day after I had my second son, Kate (my sister) and Mom delivered to me in my hospital room the news that Mom did in fact have cancer and she would be starting chemo in four days. In June, several weeks after finishing chemo, Mom had a hysterectomy where we learned her cancer presented as small studding hence why it was not blatantly clear from scans that she had cancer. After completing more chemotherapy, Mom was told at the end of September she was in remission, but she started to get weaker and eating had been a problem for her throughout the entire year (and even before that) but continued to get worse. More doctor’s appointments were scheduled and then at the end of November we were told it was time to call hospice. Everything with Mom’s diagnosis and care had been a rollercoaster. As a family we went up and down emotionally as we tried to keep up with what we were being told. We were never told how long she might or might not have, so none of us expected for less than a year from her hospitalization for Mom to be gone. At 67 years old, my mom passed away of uterine cancer. It was a very aggressive cancer and she fought really hard. She was so strong in so many ways even when I did not necessarily give her credit for it. I am so thankful for the 34 years I had with her here on earth, but I am so heartbroken it could not be longer. This year I have struggled feeling like I have completed anything that I have done which is why “Back to Basics” is my phrase. It’s time to resume taking care of myself and one of the biggest ways I will do that in 2018 is back to dedicating myself to my meditation practice. It is important to me to put my health first and be an example to my boys. I think that some of the qualities I inherited from my mom will actually shine through so much more this year than ever. In some ways I really do think that my phrase for the year goes right along with what Teal is working on which is pretty typical of us to be doing similar things whether we know it or not.

dsc_0642

This year Teal has really decided to work on 3 things – Balance, Health, and the word Build (thank you to her friend Victoria for opening her eyes to that word). There will probably be a point she will expand on those words, but first here is a brief why in her own words –

This year my mom became the last living person in her immediate family when she lost her twin brother to cancer. His cancer came on so fast that it shocked us all. When my mom told us he had cancer she told us he had at least a year if not more. He actually got less than 3 months. His cancer was fast and relentless. It came in the form of small studs that they could not treat and within 3 month of diagnosis he was gone. This left all of asking why. Why would a 58 year old man be taken that fast, why and how does this happen. The worry for my mom’s health went up, she is the last one. This is scary to think about with how fast her twin left the earth. It plants a huge seed for a need for change and protection.

Perhaps the biggest scare to all of us this year was my Dad. On December 1st I got a call from my mom at 10:30pm at night, I was alone with the boys at home and she said, I don’t want you to panic but I have called an ambulance for Dad, he has chest pain. I called my husband to come home from his concert so I could meet them at the hospital. I watched the ambulance take him in complete panic. I got to the hospital and was relieved to see him awake and talking… joking even. They ran a plethora of tests and told him he would have to stay the night. We still weren’t sure what had happened but come morning the doctors would make it clear that he had suffered a heart attack, and not only that, but would require a quadruple bypass. This was NOT on our minds, we thought he would just go home and that he had indigestion. He underwent the surgery and passed all tests with flying colors and we are now on the other side of a long recovery. He is working back up to being himself and will have to make huge changes to his life and lifestyle. As his daughter it scared me, I’m still scared. Had my mom not have called the ambulance he may have never gone to the doctor, they would tell us all later that it would have happened again and that it would have killed him, again 58 year old man. This is all too early.

IMG_4043

Everyone has room for changes, everyone. These events have really put that need for change into perspective. I have started talking to my parents about making changes and not just for them, but for all of us. My dad’s heart attack has been building for years, they typically don’t just happen. My uncle’s cancer built in his body and showed itself so late that there was nothing anyone could do.

IMG_3783

As you may know Beth, her sister Kate and I completed a Whole30 in October. We felt like we needed this, we needed the rules, we needed a reset and we needed to change what was going in our bodies. After having kids, working through that recovery and Kate and Beth’s care for their mom, our ability to balance life and diet suffered. We are preparing to start again on January 9, 2018 and work to keep many of those dietary changes in place as we work on a new way to live. My parents now own every book Melissa Hartwig wrote and will work to slowly start making changes to their diet through the Whole 30 principles. I’ll keep you posted on them!

We have also become consultants for a safer beauty company called Beautycounter that we want to share with you as well. We hope that with these changes, removing chemicals from our beauty products and what we put in and on our bodies that we can give ourselves and our family the best shot at being healthy. We never want to sound preachy or lecturey (we’ll make that a word) but we really want to share with you as well as hold ourselves accountable with making these changes. We hope you will join us as we do this. There has to be an answer somewhere. So much has been confusing to us. We have learned that so many of the problems we are facing within our family and much larger in the world has to do with what we are putting in and on our bodies. These environmental factors we can start to control to some extent. We want to spend this year balancing what we do, getting healthy (this doesn’t mean just skinny), and building relationships, knowledge, memories and our Beautycounter knowledge and business with you!

Would you be interested in joining our Facebook group for our Whole30 starting on January 9, 2018? Drop us a comment below and let’s get connected!

Baby H’s Mustache Shower

Baby H’s Mustache Shower

Back in May my close friends and sisters threw a baby shower for Baby H….or should I say Miles now? 🙂  I think it’s kind of fun that this post has taken so long to get up because there is a fun VERY newborn picture of Lane included in this post.

My sister told me afterwards she hoped it was OK that they did a mustache theme because she’s always wanted to throw a party with that theme but hadn’t had an opportunity yet.  Is it OK? Are you kidding, I still haven’t moved past the mustache trend so I absolutely loved it!!  But let’s be real out of this group ANYTHING they would have done I would have loved because they are all so darn creative.  One of them probably has better pictures on an actual camera, but you’ll have to deal with my cell phone pictures for this post.

The morning of the shower I was naturally trying to fit ALL of the errands in that I possibly could.  I was playing it by ear on what route I would take to get to the shower location as my options were highway or smaller roads.  The highway option is probably 85% of the time a bad option because this particular highway is rarely without traffic. I had really no wiggle room to get to the shower and needed everything to line up juuust the way I needed it to including the traffic. HA!  Well this happened…..

IMG_3667

Which caused me to be forty-five minutes late to my own baby shower. FOURTY-FIVE MINUTES.  I was so embarrassed!  I had held it together until I walked up to the front porch of Bitner’s house and could hear everyone inside and the waterworks just started flowing.  I text messaged my sister and told her I hadn’t made it in yet because I couldn’t stop crying (yay, pregnancy hormones!!) and she and my friend, Rebekah, came out.  I found out that several other people had made it there late as well due to a wreck that happened at my exact exit I needed to take which ultimately only made me feel slightly better.

The shower was perfect from all the decorations to the food and all the friends and family – just everything was perfect!  I don’t have pictures that show ALL of the decorations, but some you’ll see in a later post. 🙂

Mustache-invitation-Beth

Of course the invitation was designed by KateOGroup which is my sister’s company!  This is where I take the opportunity to boast about my sister who started her own small business of graphic and website design just to name a little of what she does. That means she can create any invitation from baby shower to wedding and even does other items like table tents, cupcake toppers, etc.! Kate currently has over forty holiday cards listed in the store on her website. She competes with companies like Shutterfly and Minted for business with her holiday cards, but the difference with Kate is she can customize anything for you!  Teal and I both get our holiday cards from her each year and would love for you to do the same!  Maybe you need holiday greeting cards that require no picture, well, she has those too! Use code: LIAR20 to get 20% off your order. 🙂PicMonkey Collage

They really thought of everything! My SIL sewed the mustache bags on the left and put mini wine bottles in them as a shower favor.

IMG_3696

My sister made the diaper cake and of course, my SIL sewed cute little mustache baby shoes as the cake topper!

IMG_3695

In our circle of friends we believe that adult beverages are a must at any an all showers even if the person the shower is for can’t actually partake. May you already figured that out with the shower favor.

IMG_3697[1]

Rebekah sewed the bunting in the mimosa bar picture which is now hanging proudly in Miles’ nursery!

IMG_3692

IMG_3691

My three best friends and I all had baby boys over the span of 10.5 months and so we took our first picture of all of the boys together at my shower even though Miles was still on the inside. 🙂

IMG_3669

Look at how little Lane is!!

IMG_3670

With all the hostesses! I am so lucky to have each and every one of them in my life! Seriously, I am and now Miles is lucky that they will always be apart of his life.

I’d also like to say a BIG thank you to Teal and Bitner.  This shower was not long AT ALL after Lane was born and it means the world to me that she didn’t kill me for that! 🙂  This shower was also not that long after Bitner’s wedding which I know was a lot of stress and he put a lot of work into that and then not only hosted the shower with the rest of the girls but also had the shower at his house!  And Lindsay, Tiffany, Kate, Mandy and Rebekah thank you for everything!  Y’all throw one hell of a shower and think of everything!

Running Moms Rock 5K

Running Moms Rock 5K

Back in April I had this brilliant plan that I would keep up with running 5Ks after completing Kacie’s Run and that way I could get a collection of race t-shirts that would fit my growing pregnant belly.  Except I pretty much didn’t follow through with that at all. Ha! Both Teal and I had become apart of the local chapter of Moms Run This Town and I heard from our girl, Catherine, that she would be participating in the Running Moms Rock 5K along with some of the other moms.

IMG_3236

I might not be a mom to a baby on the outside yet, but I figured since I have a baby cooking I could participate in this 5K, right?

Unlike most races that start in the wee hours of the morning this one was at 5:00 p.m.  We are in April here in Texas and the heat has already come out to play for the year, so it was a bit toasty out there.  This race was so last minute for me that I actually signed up at the race site.

Even though it was just a 5K, I definitely had a case of the going out too fasts.  Oh, well, you live and you learn plus this whole running while pregnant thing is still very new to me.  I met up with DK on the course and we completed the 5K together.  It was good to have a buddy out there and to catch up with her since I hadn’t seen her in awhile! I brought home a time of 33:58.

Since I was last minute on this race I didn’t get to participate in being on a team for the race and coming up with a costume to wear, but thankfully the other ladies in the MRTT group let me still be apart of their photo after the race! Don’t they look cute?

Back to my brilliant plan of running 5K’s so you get a t-shirt instead of a tech tee, well, that definitely didn’t happen here. Who knew they’d actually be passing out tech tees for this race.  So while I was successful in running a 5K I was not in having an extra large shirt to fit my pregnant belly. Oh well!

Baby P’s Locally Grown Shower

Baby P’s Locally Grown Shower

Last week you got to see Baby P and hear all about his arrival into this world, but today we wanted to share how we celebrated him before his arrival with the shower Beth and friends helped throw Teal and Baby P.

We rave a lot on this blog about Beth’s sister, Kate, who is a website and graphic designer.  She has designed SO MUCH stuff for us! The header for our blog was done by her and some of the recurring headers for posts are designed by her just for us!  Well, Kate, helped throw this baby shower and she was the one who landed on the theme we would use for it as well.

Locally-Grown-Texas_blue-&-green (2)

The locally grown theme is SO Teal and was perfect for celebrating her little dude, so we ran with that theme and put together what we thought was a very cute shower!

IMG_3060

Neither one of us (not that Teal would be making decos for her own shower) sew, but in our little group of girlfriends we have a couple of VERY talented ladies.  This is demonstrated by the cute bunting that was made specifically with Teal in mind.

IMG_3068

IMG_2889

IMG_3007

There was so much delicious food at this shower too including taco bites, guacamole bruschetta, jalapeno pin wheels and mini cobblers in mason jars.  Special mention goes to the snack mix with goldfish because, well, there were goldfish in it!  And of course we had cupcakes and an awesome trail mix in mason jars in the blue crate as a thank you gift to all of the guests for coming and showering Teal and Baby P!

IMG_3069

We missed getting a picture of ALL of the hostesses, but we did manage this picture!  There were also some more decorations that just didn’t get photographed. 🙁  But you might have noticed that Baby P hasn’t actually been referred to as anything other than Baby P. 🙂  There is good reason for this and also why not ALL of this shower is photographed.  Some things are better left a mystery right?!

To find out more about Kate’s custom invitations or her website and graphic design skills please check out her website here and/or shop her Etsy store here!

The 2014 Running of Large Marg

The 2014 Running of Large Marg

Ok. Not that race recaps are the most exciting thing in the world but they get even harder when you decide to wait for.ever. to post them but here goes! Hope you are still reading! 🙂

IMG_2467 (1)

We signed up to run the Levee Run in March because lets face it, who wouldn’t want to run over Large Marg? We love Large Marg and Teal was still holding on to her jealously from when Beth got to run it the first year without her. 🙁

IMG_2464 (1)

At this point Beth was about 17 weeks pregnant and Teal about 30 weeks, so we pretty much knew we wouldn’t stay together since our times were very different at this point. Teal was already having a hard time not having to stop often or pee and her pace was pretty slow at this point. Beth was still able to stay pretty close to her normal pace and way less peeing was going on. Hope you guys like knowing that information about us?

We couldn’t miss an opportunity for a picture so we made sure to stay together for the first .5 miles to at least get on the bridges together and take a pic, the rest we ran alone…. BLAHHHHH. And blah for sure with this race course.

IMG_2468 (1)

Now, while we do not bash this race by any means, the best part is literally the bridge and the rest is basically LAME. The race does an awesome job of stalking the bridge with so many cheering people. The trek across is loud and awesome because you get what seems like 10 schools of children cheering with signs, noise makers, instruments and anything else they can find! It’s awesome! The rest is dull, no cheering, no real on lookers at all, almost no water stops, and it runs you through the design district which is basically a bunch of buildings. It’s only a 10k so really it’s not that big of a deal or different from many 10ks with cheering or water or anything like that… just being whiney 🙂

The course had no bathrooms along the course. Teal had to stop and use a construction course bathroom and then another random one just sitting on the street at around mile 4.5. Pregnancy will make you lose any pickiness when it comes to needing to go. They were disgusting!

The race finishes over the bridge, which gives you something to look forward to.  The kids on the bridges actually made one of us cry while passing. They are just so positive with their cheers and really make you “in a super cheesy way” feel inspirational. One lady’s sign said, “ these kids are watching in awe of you.” Which is kind of cool to think about!

IMG_2473 (1)

Next year we totally plan to hang around. Perhaps one of the coolest things about this race is the after party. It’s located in one of the newest up and coming parts of Dallas and is located in the same area as many of the new local breweries and restaurants that are around after serving local beer and food. What’s not to love there, well, except when you can’t participate in the adult beverages?

A Little Baby Update

A Little Baby Update

Well, it’s been awhile since we’ve given an update on our pregnancies and OK, fine, it’s been awhile since we’ve given any sort of updates in general!  Since we posted the Wordless Wednesday last week we thought it was only fair to update.

SO many things have been going on from preparing for each of our babies to get here to fun life events for friends to each of us having stuff at work pick up steam.  Which ultimately has all played a part in making the time just feel like it’s flying by!

Time has flown by so much Teal now finds herself 40 weeks pregnant!  We are all on baby watch with her!

IMG_3520[1]

Beginning of 2nd trimester on the left and the end of 2nd trimester on the right

While Beth is 27 weeks pregnant and welcoming in the third trimester!

IMG_3521[1]

Beginning of the 2nd trimester on the left and end of the 2nd trimester on the right!

It feels like it was just yesterday we were posting the big news of Teal being pregnant!  For the most part things are still going smoothly with each of our pregnancies. *knock on wood* It would be nice for them to remain that way!

#LiAR Goes Ultra

#LiAR Goes Ultra

Ok, so we didn’t totally go ultra…..but we DID go and crew our favorite groupie in her first ever ultra race!!  Since Catherine refers to herself as a LiAR groupie we can just put that out there on the ol’ blog, right?!

IMG_2307[1]
Thanks again to Ninja for letting us ride with him down to Huntsville for Rocky Raccoon!  We all meet up verrry early Saturday morning which was race day to make the roughly two and a half hour drive.  We actually left Dallas at the time of the race’s start and hoped to get there just in time to see Catherine come in from her first of three 16.7 mile loops!  And we did in fact make it! We got to join in a set up right by the finish line so we could see her coming from a mile away. Ok, just kidding it was less than a mile, but you get the idea….
This was really our first time at an ultra and we’d heard about “crewing” and knew people that had gone out to “crew” a friend’s race, but what all “crewing” entailed we did not know!
IMG_2311[1]
Ha, mostly we sat around a lot and learned from other people “crewing” around us what to do.  Which was good because by the time Catherine came in from loop 1 Ninja and Byron that we’d been hanging out with had wandered off somewhere and it was just us with our racer!
IMG_2306[1]

If you zoomed in you’d definitely see the beginnings of a smile on that face – loop 1 is done!

Do you need food?!
Do you need your water refilled?!
What do you need help with?!
Are you changing shoes?!
We don’t know what to do but ask you questions?!
So again, do you need food?!
Do you need something to drink?!
And then she was off again! And we resumed our sitting and eating the food that Teal, the smart woman that she is, brought with her!  We are pregnant….we’re allowed to sit around and eat all the food! 🙂
IMG_2308[1]
We should also mention our buddy, Paul, was out there as well.  We did zero things to crew for him. Ha! Paul was pretty darn reliant on himself and the food tent for the runners.  Which also, holy cow, ALL of the food they have out there for these crazy ultra runners!
IMG_2315[1]

Congrats, Paul! A nice first 50 miler in the books for you!

And then our girl, Cat, came in for the BIG finish! Of course she’d stolen Ninja’s jacket from him at an aid station so we were looking for the wrong color race attire.  Teal could tell she was coming solely on her gait and we were excited to see her after a few hours and finished with such an awesome accomplishment!IMG_2319[1]

In case you ever doubted in this post that we were the most awesome crew people ever, well, here you go…..

Now we are just waiting for Catherine to tell us when her next 50 miler is so we can test our crewing skills again! 🙂  She’s a freaking rock star in our books!  We are lucky she let’s us even hang out with her! 🙂

One, last shout out, for that day goes to Jason of Cook Train Eat Race who completed his first 50 miler that day and in the time since this race  Jason has completed his first 100 miler! Freaking awesome! Who runs 100 miles?!

You ultra people are freaking crazy! 🙂  In a good way!  Hope you’ve enjoyed this blog post of a race that happened almost 3 months ago! We have such rock star friends!

New Year’s Double Eve & Day

New Year’s Double Eve & Day

We have decided to blame #Icepocalypse on a lot of things we have found annoying lately. We also approve of any Dallasites doing the same! Prior to #Icepocalypse, we signed up to run the Day part of the New Year’s Double race to support and keep our friend Catherine entertained. She was going to use the double races as training for her 50 mile race in February. 50, yes,  50 miles, we think she is nuts too! BUT… the stupid weather gods had other plans that basically changed the makeup of the two days. Catherine trained super hard for Dallas and wanted to race for a PR and instead decided to race the Eve portion of the the New Years Double and drop the Day race all together. That left Beth running the Day marathon solo (she would have run with Catherine the entire race) and Teal running the day half solo.

We whined…. a lot and then just decided we would make the best of it.

We woke up New Year’s Eve day and headed to Celebration Park to cheer on Catherine and Paul as they worked towards a sub 4 marathon.

It totally looked like Beth was drinking a mimosa or some sort of adult bev in that giant cup until you actually learned she was pregnant, huh?

Catherine is flying!

Catherine is flying!

We also gotta to help out another runner fan club/cheer squad and jump there car for them. 🙂  Thankfully, Teal comes prepared for such a situation!

@mcgaritydotme having fun out on the course

@mcgaritydotme having fun out on the course

Beth and Brent stayed the night at Teal and Michael’s house and basically had a chill evening of Aggie football watching. We say “chill” but did anyone watch that game? Madness! Beth, in true Beth fashion left her Garmin at home and trekked home at midnight to get it putting us both in bed after midnight, we made it to see the ball drop! Which we really didn’t expect to happen but are glad it did. Brilliant plan for marathon and half marathon running, right?!

Luckily the race had a late start and we strolled up, went to the bathroom, chatted with Ninja and began the race. Super laid back with a small race, we even missed our wave starts, whoops.  From here there is really not much else to say except we ran the entire half together, again in true preggo running fashion, we took it super slow and cautious. 🙂 Thank god for patient running buddies who don’t kill you when you have to go to the bathroom during the race!

 IMG_1872[1]

After the first lap of the race we were greeted by basically the BEST bicycle cheering squad one could hope for. All of our frunners were in the area knocking out a New Year’s Day bike ride together and they decided to bike over and cheer us on! We LOVED it and it gave us a boost to run around that dang course again!!

We also LOVED the Frisco Running Clubs water station. They sure know what they are doing. Our crazy friend Mark was at the station and we swear you could hear is voice all over the park. He kept us motivated and ran alongside us in a few spots, but don’t worry, never more than .25 of a mile. 🙂 We might also add this station had it all, oreos, m&m’s, skittle, coffee station, and black eye peas! That’s a first for us.

We are both proud to say we finished our races and love starting out the new year with a healthy activity. Next year however, we think we are sleeping in!!

Oops, We Did it Again

Oops, We Did it Again

Looks like the LiARs are liars again! We better watch out or this might become a habit! 🙂

This time around since you all already knew Teal was pregnant we couldn’t just post a bunch of pictures of us out having a glass of wine or what not because, hello, Teal can’t drink!  So a lot of the pretending was done on Beth’s end.

Beth found out in late November that she was pregnant and went ahead and tried to avoid as many circumstances as possible where drinking was involved. 🙂  Except then in December we had a happy hour planned that included a friend that had recently had a baby, so thanks to Teal and Beth’s sister, Kate, the waitress only served Beth virgin mojitos that night.

IMG_1532[1]

December 12th

It was hard at the holidays hiding the fact that I wasn’t having a glass of wine with the rest of my cousins.  I tried to be sneaky and drink sparkling apple cider, but I had to hide the bottle so no one saw it and I ended up leaving the bottle over night hidden in my mom’s laundry room next to her laundry detergent.  Naturally, she needed to do a load of laundry Christmas morning and found it. . . it was hard not going ahead and getting to tell her that she was getting another grandbaby!

But I did appreciate one of my cousins going ahead and assuming my not drinking at a family get together was because I’m such a dedicated runner and give up any alcohol at a certain point before a race! 🙂  Yet another perk to being a runner!

Of course my first sonogram was scheduled for January 2nd so telling anyone over the holidays was pretty much out, but I would like to give a big shoutout to my brother, Scott, and SIL, Lindsay for letting us steal some of each of your thunder as we used their family Birthday celebration days to spill the beans. 🙂

All fake drinking pictures! And thanks to one of my client’s for giving me a bottle of vodka! Maybe it’ll still be around when I’m allowed the occasional adult bev again later this year!

Because I work for my dad he knew early, early on that I was pregnant.  He brings me coffee every morning, we occasionally go have a sushi lunch together (and we always get the same things) and sometimes go grab a glass of wine after a long, busy day at the office.  Since a lot of things would be changing I went ahead and filled him in that come August he’d be a Granddad for the 3rd time!

Congrats to Beth & Brent on their baby who is due August 6th!!
